Hundreds packed the Union last night for the university's biggest election night booze-up.

Screens all over the building allowed the crowds to watch BBC fittie Emily Maitlis recolour the country's political map.

As the night went on, nerdy chats about "that 1992 exit poll" descended into boozy shouting and cat-calling from party supporters.

In the main chamber, an arena previously graced by Desmond Tutu and the Dalai Lama, student politicians loudly cheered when their party secured even the safest seats and mocked opponents with raised fingers.

Members of the Tory association (CUCA), wearing boaters and holding a Conservative flag, chanted a series of uncatchy songs as Labour and Lib Dem seats fell to Cameron's party.

Union events officer and poledancing impressario Juan Zober de Francisco described the event as "the most successful election night this place has ever hosted".

The blockbuster booze fest broke the Union's record bar takings, the third time one of de Francisco's events has done so. Seven people were thrown out of the building during the course of the night, as the election's stresses took their toll.

As the clock chimed 2am, word spread among the crowd that The Tab had exclusively called the Cambridge contest for the Lib Dems, four hours before the official results was announced.

One agitated female onlooker in the Tory contingent ripped up the Union print-out bearing the news and threw it disdainfully to the floor.

What sort of idiot thought the Lib Dems were ever not going to win in Cambridge? I could have called that one five years ago!

You probably should have called it five years ago then – you probably would have got pretty good odds, after their shock 2005 win. Did you?

There was someone hovering about taking photos of the CUCA exec+friends in their Wode for Change as they left. Have they gone up anywhere? I'd like to see if there are any nice ones of myself =)
