As a result of overwhelming public demand, The Tab has decided to end the debate over how to spell everyone’s favourite mid-week haunt.

‘Cindies’ is the staple spelling in humoursly entitled facebook groups (‘CINDIES+LADS+LAUGHS’), ‘Cindy’s’ actually makes grammatical sense and ‘Cindis’ and ‘Sindy’s’ are really just in there to make up the numbers and prevent this fudge of a survey from fully acknowledging its own absurdity. So, in the red corner…

Cindy’s

Why?: Because before it became ‘Ballare’s', the club was called ‘Cinderella’s’ and “the singular possessive form is therefore appropriate” in the words of The Tab’s grammar-Nazi Phoebe Luckhurst (she needs to get a ‘Life’…geddit?).

Who calls it that?: Jesus and Downing JCRs in their freshers guides, the guy who made The Tab’s ‘Weekly Photos From Cindy’s and Fez’ image before realising the gravity of his decision.

Google results: 430,000 (probably completely and utterly irrelevent).

Cindies

Why?: Because its, er, really popular? Almost every single reference on facebook refers to ‘Cindies’. As does the title of a series of increasingly repetitive films produced by a financially troubled rival of ours.

Who calls it that?: Most people, including Emma University Challenge hero Alex Guttenplan.

Google results: 20,400

Sindy’s

Why?: Because that is what those irritating plastic dolls are called. And people sometimes spell it like this on Facebook. Probably.

Who calls it that?: People who hit the wrong key when trying to type one of the other options

Google results: 4,350,000

Cindis

Why?: Because sometimes the lads from the Countrywide Integrated Noncommunicable Diseases Intervention programme come down for a cheeky ‘No Risk Tuesdays’. Which admittedly isn’t a compelling reason.

Who calls it that?: Probably no-one.

Google results: 104,000

Cindy's is probably what should be used, but I'm pretty sure people overwhelmingly use cindies because they are too lazy to use an apostrophe when texting/fb-ing. That's my excuse anyway. Time is money.

Actually, it was called Cinderella Rockafellas. In the mid 80s. The it was Fifth (Filth) Avenue.

  3. Angry twat says:

Personally I think we are all a bunch of pricks for calling it "cindies". Its a fucking shit name. Why can't the people at this uni face up to the fact its actually called ballare?

  4. Jen says:

I'm glad somebody has finally addressed this issue.
    No, seriously.

  5. Harry says:

"Cindy's" is the only one that makes sense as a word, but fuck that. "Cindies" is neither possessive or plural anymore – it's our word, and it will be a sad day when we trade our history for grammatical correctness.

  6. Guttenfan says:

    Alex Guttenplan is always right.

I agree, we should ask the man with a Gutten plan! Can't believe I'm writing this, week 7 always see my life take a turn for the worse!

Cindoirs for those who are a bit more cultured.

  10. I'm going with Cindies, for no other reason apart from that's how I've always been told it is spelt by you guys! However you spell it, looking forward to the first Rumboogie 2010 / 2011! Leigh – Manager of Cindies

    I'd say that "Cindie's" was pretty common…

People wonder why students get a bad press. No-one calls it Cindies apart from Cambridge Uni students. Most of you weren't born when it was called Cindies and it doesn't make you look big or clever for doing so, it makes you look like a twat. It's a shit club and no amount of ironic renaming is going to stop you sounding like pricks for calling it that.People wonder why students get a bad press.
