So everyone wanted to eat in Hall. If you get into that virtuous circle, then formal hall is a good way to bring a college together, get people to know one another, bring friends from other colleges. Don't throw the baby out with the bath water. Abolish the need to buy meal tickets, and you won't be able to re-create that sort of collegiate community. Improve the quality of the food, instead.
