As Joy Starkey advised us last term, pastels generally are in this summer. But walking round Cambridge this weekend, we found lots of people donning pink trousers to get summery but stay warm. Pink trousers may well be the answer to the disastrous overkill of red chinos, for which Cambridge is apparently famous.

Vintage fairs are dubious. Anachronism and hemp abound, with the apparent ethos that clothes mature like cheeses – when really they often end up just smelling like them.

But Judy’s Vintage Fair, which comes to Cambridge just a handful of times every year, was a brilliant exception. Lots of friendly owners are dedicated to each stall, meaning that you have constant personal shopping assistants. More importantly, many accept debit cards. Most importantly, almost everything is really, really cheap.

The only thing worse than hitting one of Cambridge’s sweat-pit-clubs in full formal attire, is performing a walk of shame home in the morning, in full formal attire. The untied bowtie and the heels-in-hands look are, no matter what you might think, hopelessly conspicuous. Save yourself the embarrassment and adapt your formal wear to retain style, elegance – and, above all, a scrap of dignity.

Girls’ formal wear is always going to be more flexible, so choose something that is respectable without being too solemn – this isn’t a ball. A red bowtie with blue braces makes the dinner suit a little more adaptable for the night to come – and remember, think ahead: if you’re aiming for a speedy strip, real bowties come off the quickest.

Doff the heels and don the trainers – nobody wants to muddy their stilettos in the grim puddles outside Life, let alone be seen stumbling around in them the morning after. A Harrison jacket can play down the bowtie, and that tartan inner lining will look great on the bedroom floor next to your strewn red bowtie.

Steal a jumper, cardy, or whatever you can – you’re essentially faced with a free wardrobe, so make the most of it. This is less easy for boys, so just get rid of the bowtie and braces, and BAM – shuffle back in the early hours or just head straight to your 9 am lectures.

Japanese fashion has hit the industry hard this year!

Pastel is THE trend of Spring/Summer ’12. Luckily you don’t have to be a Disney Princess to work this look. While it can look great in a feminine blouse or dress, it can also look chic in clean, tailored separates and masculine loafers. Think Dolly Mixture, Party Rings and marshmallow hues. This trend is sickly sweet.

With week 8 approaching, and end of term tiredness kicking in it’s time to have some fun with your wardrobe. Experiment with your brightest colours; mish-mashing unlikely hues to create a statement look. When it comes to shopping, forget your Winter woes and look ahead to Spring. Don’t shy away from brights, metallics and even the transparent (…you’ll see what I mean). The most important thing with colour blocking, however, is to keep it simple. Guys – don’t be afraid to look to the women’s trends for the season, and make sure you check out the womenswear section in your favourite high street shops. Ladies – be bold with the make-up: different colours on each lip and simple, colourful eyes add just the right amount of drama.

With the Cambridge sun emerging from the perpetual grey clouds, everyone is getting that Spring feeling. Looking ahead to the sunnier months it’s time to focus on the basics: make-up.

The big push this season is radiant skin, with a simple-but-statement eye or lip. Slick on the dark reds and purples, apply a top gloss to make your lips irresistibly kissable and team with a naked eye (well, a bit of mascara).

Apply heavy black liner under the eye to take you back to the 90s and use bright colour blocks on your upper lids - greens and blues. Finish with a Winehouse-esque flick.

For a dressy occasion go with a statement colour and apply a polka-dot under either eye to make your eyes sparkle.
